Quali sono le probabilità di assistere, nei prossimi anni, ad un’invasione cinese di Taiwan? Fonti interne alle Forze Armate statunitensi ritengono che quest’ipotesi possa realizzarsi entro il 2027. Ma davvero Pechino avrebbe le capacità per conquistare l’isola, occupandola militarmente? Come si svilupperebbe un eventuale conflitto armato intorno a Taiwan? Che ruolo giocherebbero potenze regionali quali Giappone e Filippine?

Ci porremo questi ed altri interrogativi insieme ad Axel Berkofsky, Professore Associato presso l’Università di Pavia, e codirettore dell’Osservatorio Asia presso l’ISPI di Milano. Fra i suoi principali interessi di ricerca troviamo le politiche estere e di sicurezza di Cina e Giappone, la storia della Cina, la sicurezza nel continente asiatico e le relazioni tra quest’ultimo e l’Unione Europea. Ha recentemente presentato un suo studio sulle prospettive di invasione di Taiwan presso il Ministero della Difesa.

What are the odds of China invading Taiwan? This scenario is regarded as likely to happen before 2027 by some members of the US military. But would Beijing really be able to conquer and occupy the island? How would a war in the South China Sea unfold? What would be the role of such regional actors as Japan or the Philippines?

We will discuss these and other issues related to Cross-Strait relations with Axel Berkofsky, Associate Professor at the University of Pavia, and Co-Head of the Asia Centre at ISPI. His research activity focuses on Japanese and Chinese foreign and security policies, Chinese history, Asian security, and EU-Asia relations. He recently presented a study on the prospects for a Chinese invasion of Taiwan at the Italian Ministry of Defence.
