The birth of the phenomenon of Muslim foreign fighting from Europe is often, incorrectly related to ISIS and to the Bataclan terrorist strikes that took place in Paris between 2014 and 2015. In fact, such phenomenon originated within the context of the Bosnian War (1992-1995), which had a crucial impact on its subsequent evolution. It is on the Balkan battlegrounds that European foreign fighters first came into contact with ideological elements influenced by al Qaida and its specific jihadist narrative. What was, then, the role of the Bosnian conflict within jihadist attacks such as 9-11 or the massacres in Madrid (2004) and London (2005)?
Michele Benazzo is currently completing a PhD in International History and Politics at the Geneva Graduate Institute, with a thesis titled ‘The Forgotten Generation: British Muslim Foreign Fighting in the Bosnian Civil War, 1981-1995’. His main research interest is the interplay between Migration, Integration and Political Violence, as he intersects history and international relations to explain transnational violence - specifically, European Muslim foreign fighting.
Francesco Mazzucotelli is professor of History of Turkey and of the Near East at the University of Pavia, Italy. His fields of research cover areas such as identity processes, politicization of ethnic and confessional identities, and the role of urban spaces and urbanization processes in political and social marginalization. These issues are studied within a historical, anthropological, and sociological framework.
