INVADING TAIWAN: (MUCH) EASIER SAID THAN DONE, XI JINPING

Cairoli College is pleased to host in Aula Magna the conference Invading Taiwan: (much) Easier Said than Done, Xi Jinping Tuesday, March 12, 6:00 p.m. What are the odds of China invading Taiwan? This scenario is regarded as likely to happen before 2027 by some members of the US military. But would Beijing really be able to conquer and occupy the island? How would a war in the South China Sea unfold? What would be the role of such regional actors as Japan or the Philippines? We will discuss these and other issues related to Cross-Strait relations with Axel Berkofsky, Associate Professor at the University of Pavia, and Co-Head of the Asia Centre at ISPI. His research activity focuses on Japanese and Chinese foreign and security policies, Chinese history, Asian security, and EU-Asia relations. He recently presented a study on the prospects for a Chinese invasion of Taiwan at the Italian Ministry of Defence.
